I'm Laura, a visual designer who enjoys solving complex problems with simple solutions.
I live and work by my values: integrity, authenticity, transparency, and a people-first approach. I focus on the impact and ethics of my work; trying to leave the world a better place than I found it.
On a team, I value cooperation, sensitivity, and harmony. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to identify others’ motives and defuse conflicts and tension (often with humor, positivity, and open communication). I find that it’s easy for me to relate to a wide variety of people, and because of that, I do well in a team environment.
As a designer, I use my connections to my emotions, imagination, empathy, and sensitivity to create. Where others see facts and figures, I see symbols, metaphors, and hidden meanings. My greatest gift is my depth of sensitivity & empathy.

One of my favorite things about working in UX is how it gives me the ability to help and connect with people. The work involved in UX goes beyond UI design; good UX helps users do what they want to do when interacting with a product or design. Being able to create experiences that are meaningful and relevant to people is something I find rewarding.
My first love was drawing. When I was a kid, I used to spend so much time just doodling whatever I felt like, because it was fun. It wasn’t until highschool that I discovered design; my parents gifted me Photoshop (CS3, I think) one year for Christmas and after that I was hooked. I made web banners, designed our family Christmas cards, and learned how to edit and manipulate pictures I 'd taken.
After high school, I studied graphic design at The Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. After I graduated, I landed an internship at an ecommerce startup which was called Blue Acorn at the time. When my internship ended, I was offered a full-time job there—which I happily accepted. It was there that I learned how to stick to deadlines while still creating quality work. We worked with brands like Le Creuset, Olympus, Metallica, and Dirt Devil to name a few. I was on the sales and marketing team, and I worked on branding, marketing collateral, presentation decks, proposals, print materials, trade booth exhibit designs, newsletters, and also on web design and digital media for our company site.

I worked at Blue Acorn (now Blue Acorn iCi) for seven years! When I started, we had about 30 people on our team, and when I left there were well over a thousand. I left to move with my husband to Japan (where we currently live), and now I freelance full-time, doing UI and design work.
Beyond working as a designer, I also enjoy reading, taking pictures, riding my bike, and hanging out with my two dogs, Bruce and Neeko.
